That's great! I wish we could know more about the codeshare with EK on ten other routes. Being a partner with EK would be great for EI.

It's a 7 or 8 hour flight so EI-DAA better have been used on the first flight. I would not like to fly on the first flight with no PTV. I heard EI-LAX was getting PTVs, any news on that?

I've been busy uploading some photos to Jetphotos.net (sod all chance of getting any accepted to A.net!)

Anyway, good news for EI and a new start. It's also positive that the minister has today announced that proposals for the privatisation of dear old EI will be coming to cabinet either next week or the week after and they will be aiming for a June privatisation.

You'll probably have heard that the Oireachtas cttee on Transport is to publish ads in the national media (the IT, the Indo and "De paper") about this; although the decision appears to have been taken at govt level, I think it's important to make a submission; thankfully, the govt seems to be making the right decision. And how do we know that?

Because SIPTU is throwing a hissy fit. Oh yes, Halpenny was on the media today breathing fire. "There was no meaningful consultation", for which the correct translation is "You dared to make an aviation policy decision without our permission ... pestilence, plague and endless repeats of East-Enders on you and your descendents".

Joking apart, this is a very important day. Not just because of the Dubai route, but because it marks a serious commitment to unshackle Aer Lingus from the various regulations; it will be able to react to and take advantage of regulatory changes in exactly the same way as other companies, particularly FR. It is sad that, despite SIPTU's abhorrence of MO'L, the effect of their intentions for EI would be to put it at a serious commercial disadvantage against FR. The question now is, will SIPTU have its bluff called? They threatened industrial action. Will they proceed. There are still a lot of obstacles facing EI, but I am optimistic.

I am, incidentally, even more optimistic about the fleet choice. Boeing's imminent launch of the 787-10 is going to be of significant interest to EI. Here's hoping and remember, with state ownership out the window, there'll be no protectionism to force EI to buy the plane they really want ...

That reminds me to ask, was there any spectacular launch event for Virgin in DXB? I saw nothing in the media, but usually there is.
I liked Virgin's mockery billboard of EK "Keep discovering... until you find the best". Also quite daring for Dubai, "Extra inches where they count".

I am sure there are those who will find it unbelievable, that I, the Dr Doom and Gloom of the A380, might suggest EI stay with the A 350. Why? Communality with their present fleet. EI has a serious cash problem and one of the strengths of FR is their one aircraft fleet. Mixing A 330s with 787s makes less sense than 330's and 350s.

However, I assume DM is smart enough to know all that and will make the right decision, even if it turns out to be 787.

Well, that's what happens when you tell DM you don't want him to talk to your members before getting them to vote for a strike.

It's no different to flying to the eastern US.
